Pass on this uneven effort. The pirate aspect of the story is unnecessary to the plot, and while the Passover information is deployed effectively, it doesn’t make up for the weak scansion and trite rhymes.

This light mystery is accessible to kids new to chapter books, and will entertain the undiscerning, but it doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny. Only for libraries in desperate need of Hanukkah chapter books. All others can pass.
