Following “Harry Potter,” a number of authors have tackled the idea of magical schools for unusually gifted children. It would be easy enough to toss this book into that ever-growing pile, but ties to current events make this both relatable and timely. Recommended.
Though this series ender is marred a bit by multiple points of view and plot lines, as well as dozens of major and minor characters, it all seems to gloriously come together at the very end.
Though well-written and dramatically told, this novel is replete with graphic violence, rape, torture, and executions, which may make it a questionable choice for younger readers. On the other hand, teens will find much to love in a novel in which the princess grows to become a force to be reckoned with.
Illustrator Miller is best known for his work in graphic novels, comics, and film. This dramatic retelling of the Arthurian legend has been picked up to be a Netflix original series, heightening reader interest.
Following hard on the heels of Green’s first novel in the “Smoke Thieves” series, a multitude of plot lines, quick scene changes, and a cast of thousands make this an intriguing, if sometimes challenging to follow, read.
