PreS-K–Pizzoli’s latest enters new territory with a soothing nature-themed bedtime story. With a question-and-answer format reminiscent of Eric Carle’s
Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?, this book follows a young child with tan skin and brown hair around the yard and into the house asking various creatures where they go when the sun goes down. After talking to all the pets in the house, the narrator then asks the child, “Where do you go when the sun goes down?” and then proceeds to review each of the places the animals call home, asking if the child goes there. This last line of questioning brings up some giggle-worthy ideas before finally landing on the perfect place for a child to go at night. Children will be fascinated by this concept and will love answering the silly questions with a strong “No!” The illustrations are done with Pizzoli’s usual pen-on-paper screen printing technique but with a new layered look. Each color is allowed to show through small gaps in the following layers, adding interest to what would otherwise be large swaths of earth-toned color.
VERDICT Administering to children’s natural curiosity, this is a sweet bedtime book or for use in lessons on animals at night.
