Gr 3-7–This new edition to the series is packed with information on every conceivable aspect of ancient Egypt’s art, history, culture, mythology, science, and technology. Every spread of this almost 200-page volume covers a different subsection of ancient Egyptian knowledge. There are spreads featuring the rise of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Cleopatra and her political and personal relationships with Roman Empire leaders, famous myths in Egyptian history and the truths behind them, as well as explanations of everyday life in ancient Egypt. Everything from the visual layout of this book to the tone and language of the text is pitch-perfect for an upper elementary audience. While the glossary and the index seem sparse for a book that conveys so much information, it’s hard to fault an informational text that includes a discussion of gender roles.
VERDICT This bizarrely fun take on ancient Egypt will attract elementary students who aspire to truly “know it all.”
