Visions of Puerto Rico

Gr 5 Up—Puerto Rico's landscape was forever changed in 2017 as the Caribbean island was ravaged by back-to-back hurricanes Irma and Maria. Narrated by award-winning Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno (West Side Story), this documentary was produced earlier that year before the disasters and showcases the beauty of the island, from its natural beaches and wildlife to city life. Featuring footage captured by drones and helicopters, viewers are guided through the island's many notable attractions and picturesque views. While it does go briefly into some historical anecdotes, this film is meant to be a concise overview. The drone footage allows viewers to see unique vantage points, but at times it feels awkward when unsuspecting townspeople shoot bewildered looks into the camera. As Puerto Ricans try to rebuild their lives after the hurricanes have changed the island's landscape and future, this program could be used as a historical reference Puerto Rico before the damage. Viewers searching for more in-depth knowledge about the island should look elsewhere, but those seeking a quick glance at the island will be entertained.
