Gr 3–5—In Joyce's third title (Atheneum, 2012) in the "Rise of the Guardians" series, the Guardians and others from Santoff Claussen encounter Toothiana, a fierce warrior while on a journey to the top of the world. They are on their way to consult with the Tsar Luna, head of the Luna Lamadary, to confirm the disappearance of Pitch, the Nightmare King, following the battle at the Earth's core. When Katherine loses her last baby tooth, everyone is anticipating a visit from Toothiana. The Tooth Fairy's visit doesn't go as planned and another Guardian's dramatic history is revealed. Complex and wordy, the story does have humorous moments. Listeners are privy to Katherine's internal monologue as she plunges to the ground—almost—and wonders where all of her flying friends are when she needs them. Later, she's kidnapped by some very smelly monkeys. Themes of loyalty, protection, and fear of growing up run through the adventure. Gerard Doyle's tonality and rhythm enhance the story. His voice varies for each of the many characters and his performance of the humorous interludes is perfect. Savvy older listeners may enjoy the story in audio only, but most upper elementary students will benefit from reading along and referring back to the book, which includes lovely illustrations, elaborate chapter headings, and fanciful decorations.—
