Gr 3-7–A library for children can never have too many books about rocks, gems, and crystals, and this is a lively one to add to the collection. Written by two scientists from the Geological Society of London, this title is teeming with facts and mixed-media artwork that provide a solid overview of all things geological, including plate tectonics, rock identification, and classification, as well as how rocks are formed. The authors offer details about how the Earth was formed, the chemical makeup of rocks, the differences between among kinds of minerals, and why certain gems are much more valuable than others. A clever layout and beautiful illustrations complement the tone and accessibility of the text, with plenty of engaging diagrams and sidebars. A detailed time line at the beginning of the book aids basic understanding, and the information is well organized, as many of the facts circle back to references made earlier in the text. An in-depth glossary is very helpful.
