Gr 1-5–Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the globe, but so much of those waters have gone unexplored. Offering readers a close-up view of amazing creatures that they might otherwise never know, Krestovnikoff examines these vast habitats. The first stop on this watery journey is the coastline. The author offers detailed descriptions of tide pools, estuaries, salt marshes, and more. Readers will marvel at the kelp forest, a sort of tropical rain forest that houses a variety of species at each layer. Krestovnikoff’s knowledge about “ocean giants” is particularly impressive. (A giant squid has eyes that are the size of a Frisbee.) Vibrant and expansive illustrations complement the text. A table of contents and an introduction can be found at the beginning of the book. The final pages examine bioluminescence and human impact on seas and oceans.
VERDICT A beautiful and fact-filled look at our oceans, and an excellent resource for upper elementary students or readers interested in learning more about the subject.
