The Medical Revolution: How Technology Is Changing Health Care

ReferencePoint. Oct. 2020. 80p. Tr $30.95. ISBN 9781682829295.
Gr 6 Up–This slim volume highlights the benefits of new and modern technology in the context of health care. Each of the five chapters explains a specific topic, including genetics technology, 3-D printing, and how the rapid advances in knowledge have led to dramatic medical results. Each chapter begins with a story about a specific case, such as a robot who was programmed to detect cancer cells just as accurately as a medical doctor. The text is enhanced by attractive photos and illustrations. Sections discuss a specific technology, such as surgery performed by robots or the application of nanotechnology to lessen the severity of peanut allergies. The large type is easy to read. The use of various shades of blue helps to organize sections. Lengthy quotes from medical researchers are peppered throughout the text, with shorter quotations in blue boxes. However, these extended quotations may be difficult for some readers to fully understand. Source notes, a list of additional readings, and an index round out this title.
VERDICT A suitable purchase for school and public libraries but given the rapid updates in technology and the information regarding the search for a COVID-19 vaccine, the title may be quickly supplanted by newer information.
