K-Gr 2–Flo, a single drop of water and this book’s guide, falls from the sky and meets the ground for the first time. Flo slips into a stream, joins a lake, goes over a waterfall and falls into a frightfully unfathomable darkness. All the while, Flo questions who she is and where she should go. It is when Flo is still and quiet that she is taken by the warmth of the sun to evaporate into the sky, peacefully returning to her “home” in the rain clouds above. End papers depicting rain clouds filled with many blue drops of water, with one a slightly brighter blue to designate Flo, frame the book’s beginning and end. Illustrations depict Flo on her journey surrounded by happy trees, rocks, and dinosaurs, emphasizing the billions of years water has been traveling through this same cycle. The presence of these prehistoric creatures on the page opens the door to sharing this with those readers obsessed with dinosaurs, while also presenting an early scientific concept. The book includes a detailed and brightly illustrated diagram of the complete watery cycle with technical vocabulary terms. The text is presented in simple narration, without advanced scientific details, making this book a good introductory lesson to the water cycle and the subject of science in general.
VERDICT Reminiscent of George Ella Lyon’s All the Water in the World, this book demonstrates the journey of the water cycle with an existential edge.
