Artist Fitch spent years documenting what she saw to create photorealistic images of much more than seasons. While she focused on the Northeast, the flora and fauna she illustrates are common to many areas and include readily identifiable life forms. Superimposed numbers help readers identify the species pictured, some of which are featured as close-ups with more information about up to nine individual living things from the monthly compositions. Short blurbs by Kosek are rich with sensational descriptions and specific facts. Especially stunning are glowing specimens pictured at night, including Luminescent Panellus (Foxfire), fireflies, and yellow-spotted salamanders. Fitch’s explanation of her process may inspire nature walks, photos, and journals; libraries might want to feature it in nature-themed displays. Included is a a species list of scientific names.
