K-Gr 1–Based on the Netflix show The Creature Cases, this book introduces readers to familiar-looking animal secret agents, reminiscent of characters from the Disney movie Zootopia. The members of the show’s secret agent team, CLADE, are presented in a trading card style that highlights each animal and their special talents. For example, Bill and Jill are mice that call themselves the Mice Squad and love music, and the Stinkwells are brother skunks that create gadgets for the team. The book uses mostly simple sentences, many of which are 6 to 8 words, and also includes several complex sentences that early readers may need assistance with. It is not plot driven—the story introduces readers to the characters rather than describing an adventure. Each character is presented by sharing a little about their role on the team, as well as how they support the team and sometimes a fun fact. The emphasis is on how each member is valued and plays an important part. Illustrations are bright and captivating and match those used in the TV show.
VERDICT This book that introduces the members of The Creature Cases team will be enjoyed by young readers who enjoy animal adventures similar to Zootopia.
