PreS-Gr 3—This collection includes three reissued and award-winning tales from the creators of "The Black Lagoon Adventures" series. Written by Mike Thaler and illustrated by Jared Lee, these books focus on the outrageously comical fears of a young boy named Hubie, who imagines all kinds of silly but frightening scenarios when he's faced with new situations at school. The series is both humorous and reassuring for kids who might be dealing with their own "first experience" fears. In "The Teacher from the Black Lagoon," Hubie, who has first-day jitters, imagines that his new teacher, Mrs. Green, is going to be a fire-breathing dragon. In "The Librarian from the Black Lagoon," Hubie is sure that Mrs. Beamster, the school librarian, will laminate anyone caught talking in the library, and in "The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon," Hubie imagines the worst about the new gym teacher. Jared Lee's pencil illustrations are accompanied by music by Scotty Huff and Robert Reynolds and narration by Jonathan Lipnicki and the voices of Diana Canova (Teacher), Alexander Gould (Librarian) and Joey Stack (Gym Teacher). Also included is a learning guide with a summary and objectives for each title and before and after viewing activities. Additional bonus videos include interviews with Thaler and Lee, who talk about how they each got started as well as their collaboration on the series.
VERDICT This reissue would make an excellent addition to library collections for a new audience.
