Gr 6 Up—This mix of animation and interviews with pet store owners and passionate experts in the tarantula field explains how these spiders became household pets. (The more exotic species became more common as pets in the 1980s.) The DVD is full of facts. When considering if a tarantula likes to be petted, a spokesperson from Insectropolis, the Bugseum of New Jersey, says, "No, she doesn't like it. She tolerates it. She is used to it." Another explains the tarantula's first line of defense isn't its venom. Instead, it runs away. The video also discusses the process for a captive-born spiderlings to reach customers and breeding, with the mention of spider sperm. This DVD also dispels the myth about the danger of tarantulas. According to the program, they aren't deadly to humans.
VERDICT This quirky film offers a different take on tarantulas. It's a suitable addition to public library collections.
