PreS-Gr 4–Sill introduces the concepts of camouflage and defense mechanisms within the context of the fish world in a simple and concise manner. The husband and wife team collaborate for another successful entry in their early science “About…” series. As in the other titles in the series, the realistic full-bleed illustrations will mesmerize readers, while the text provides easy-to-follow information. However, an unfortunate sentence placement gives the impression that fish and their environs should be protected solely for the commercial, recreational, and food value that benefits humanity. The Spanish translation of the original English text is easily accessible. An appendix is included. The bibliography and web links are English-only resources.
VERDICT The author and illustrator provide engaging information about the multifaceted ecosystem of fish. A serviceable addition to any STEAM curriculum.
