Smoosh’s Super-Duper-Fun Day: Ready-to-Read Level 2

K-Gr 2–Alien friends Smoosh and Mallow board a donut-shaped spacecraft and teleport to an amusement park for a day of adventure. Despite Smoosh’s proclamation that “Nothing will get in our way,” their perfect day is threatened by long lines, bathroom breaks, and the discovery that the “swoopiest, loopiest, zoomiest ride ever” is closed. Mallow is sure the adventure is ruined, but the optimistic Smoosh saves the day by finding fun from an unexpected source. Told entirely in speech bubbles between two friends—one tall and purple, the other short and blue—this story is aimed at the “Elephant and Piggie” crowd. The text offers a perfect level of decodability and repetition for the intended audience, but the characters lack the development and charm of Gerald, Piggie, and other early reader duos. The candy-colored illustrations offer little to contribute a distinct personality to either character, but readers will enjoy poring over the details of the alien amusement park and its otherworldly background characters.
