PreS-Gr 3—This DVD collection brings back three popular children's books that focus on changes and seasons. Laura Vaccaro Seeger's award-winning picture title, First the Egg, is a simple but educational book which focuses on the transformations of everyday things; from egg to chicken, seed to flower, and even word to story. Narrated by Elle Fanning and with music by Jack Sundrud and Rusty Young, this beautifully animated film will encourage children to think about growth and change in the world around them. Lois Ehlert's Planting a Rainbow is brought to life by the narration of P.J. Verhoest and the music of Crystal Taliefero. This informative story about a child planning and planting a flower garden full of rainbow colors is enhanced with Ehlert's vibrant, bold collage illustrations. Julia Rawlinson's Fletcher and the Falling Leaves features a young fox cub who is worried when his favorite tree begins to lose its leaves. When his attempt to reattach the leaves doesn't work, he awakes one winter morning to witness the beautiful transformation that has taken place. Tiphanie Beeke's lovely impressionistic-type watercolor illustrations complement this tale of innocence and discovery. Bonus materials including interviews with authors Seeger and Rawlinson give viewers a glimpse into the authors' studio to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the creation of these wonderful stories.
VERDICT This DVD makes an excellent addition to library collections where the books are popular.
