PreS-K–It is another beautiful day, and Rose is ready to get going. Accompanied by her trusty cat Casper, Rose performs her regular morning routine, from eating breakfast to brushing her teeth to getting dressed. With each activity, Rose uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate her needs to those around her. This board book incorporates bright hues and chunky, geometric illustrations to visually represent the story. Interestingly, Rose is the only human depicted, and she is self-sufficient in the absence of adult caregivers; however, anthropomorphic companions surround her as she goes through her day. Brief text and large images make the book appealing to children, and a vertical segment on the side of each spread models an ASL sign used in the narrative. These diagrams are not sufficiently comprehensive for readers unfamiliar with ASL, who will likely require further investigation. There are no additional resources; however, because the book is built on sturdy board pages, it will stand up to frequent manipulation and exploration. Additionally, a mirror on the last page helps readers see themselves, especially as they attempt to replicate the ASL signs presented.
VERDICT Though limited, this brightly illustrated board book can help introduce young readers and their caregivers to American Sign Language.
