Gr 3–5—Famous African Americans representing the arts, literature, and sports. Each volume begins with a list of words to know and then segues into a chronological exploration of the subject's life. While personal lives are covered, the focus is primarily on careers. Bright, colorful photos accompany the texts along with "Fun Fact" and "…Says" sidebars. However, the quotes featured in "…Says" are not sourced. The narrative is lively and the volume on Misty Copeland is especially inspiring, though generalizations do occur: there was "some racism in ballet's history."
VERDICT The popularity of the subjects along with the eye-catching layouts makes this series a top contender for pleasure reading and report writing.
