PreS-Gr 1–National Geographic doesn’t disappoint with this nonfiction reader on hippos. Simple yet interesting facts curated by expert educators are presented in a child-friendly manner. The table of contents allows readers to find exactly what is needed for research purposes, but the book also reads fluently for an enthusiast looking for fun information. Incredible pictures of the hippopotamus body, face, teeth, and even hippo babies will make readers feel as if they are up close and personal with this larger-than-life mammal. Fun facts and related jokes are sprinkled through the pages to entertain young readers. Educators will love the activities and the glossary and word bank to create lessons with new and interesting vocabulary words.
VERDICT A solid introduction to the hippopotamus for beginning readers. Recommended for general purchase for a public or school library nonfiction section.
