K-Gr 3–A charming and authentic celebration of everyday bilingual family life. With bright and cheerful illustrations, the book follows a child’s experiences and highlights relatable moments throughout the day, such as driving “...en el carro to take Sissy a la escuela.” This book serves as a mirror for bilingual families and a window for others to experience a different but common way of life. This isn’t a completely bilingual book, despite the title. The text isn’t translated word for word. Instead, Dolce shows how each parent incorporates their own language, and she perfectly captures how bilingual children often speak: blending the two languages together. Rather than a grand storyline, the beauty of this story is in the ordinary. From sharing meals to bedtime routines, the slice-of-life moments filled with bilingual expressions are presented as a normal part of life. The text and the illustrations adeptly work side by side to fill in clues as to what the words mean, and a helpful palabras y frases/words and phrases section is included at the end to encourage vocabulary building.
VERDICT This book is great for all ages and should find a home in every public library and school library setting.
