Gr 2-5–In this travel guide translated from the 2015 Polish edition, an unnamed narrator asks rhetorical questions such as: “Want to know more about the fascinating culture and history of Italy?” and “Why is Italy called Italy?” The stylized maps generally hint at locations of well-known places such as Rome, Pisa, and Pompeii. Words with asterisks are listed in the glossary along with simple Italian phrases. Five basic recipes are appended. There are no photographs, merely pen and ink sketches. The book lacks an index and the table of contents is not that helpful for focusing on topics of interest.
VERDICT The no-frills writing style might appeal more to adults reading along with children than independent young readers. Pass.
