K-Gr 2–Everything seems suspiciously calm around Leo and Annie’s house one morning until Mom realizes that the alarms didn’t go off and now they are running late. From there, it’s one mishap after another in this book by the Canadian Love It or List It host: Leo forgets his homework and brings the wrong lunch, Annie can’t find her favorite dress and ruins her art project, Dad loses track of the lawnmower, and Mom’s usually reliable computer crashes. When they try to turn things around with a pizza dinner, their meal gets delivered to the wrong address. Luckily, Annie suggests a meal they can all make together, and this quality time is just what this white family (whose members have blond and brown hair) needed. Told in rhyming couplets, the story captures a series of chaotic but relatable family moments. While some rhymes are forced, the cheerful and comical illustrations keep the tone upbeat. Each character’s mini-crisis is handled with humor, and the narrative flows briskly from one dilemma to the next. The day ends on a comforting note as the family comes together for dinner, reinforcing the idea that what matters most isn’t a perfect day but being together through the imperfect ones.
VERDICT A solid if sentimental purchase for any collection serving young children and families.
