It Ain't Easy Being Green

Gr 4 Up—In the U.S. Virgin Islands, green iguanas are abundant. Possibly brought there from South America in centuries past or more recently as part of the pet trade, they are now all over the island. The film focuses primarily on the island of St. John, where some people enjoy them, others find them a nuisance, and where they are adversely affecting incomes for farmers by eating crops. Suggestions for solutions to the iguana overpopulation issue range from lethal (having a hunting season) to nonlethal ideas such as physical barriers to protect crops and urging people not to feed them. The practical and impractical aspects of the different ideas are touched on through the comments of residents and businesses being directly affected by these creatures. Most agree that some type of balance must be found and that a single solution may not be the answer for all.
