Gr 3–5—When Billy Broccoli's ghost, Hoover Porterhouse—known as the "The Hoove"—tells Billy that he has been grounded until he learns responsibility, Billy is determined to help his friend understand this essential lesson. With Hoover blocked from leaving Billy's house by the "Higher Ups," Billy must find a solution quickly. The boy determines that pets help teach responsibility, so he sets off to find the perfect one for The Hoove. Unfortunately, the ghost despises the little gecko Billy brings home, terrifies the fighting fish, and leaves the goats running amuck in the neighbor's yard. This may be a message story, but it has plenty of humor, spirit, and character to engage kids who will cheer for Billy and giggle at the antics of his ghostly friend. Winkler does a nice job of reading the tale (Scholastic, 2013), giving all the major characters easily distinguishable voices. His pacing adds to the quirkiness of their personalities. Those looking for a friendship story, a ghost tale, and a good laugh will find this a satisfying listen.—
