Gr 9 Up—This collection examines the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, using relevant documents to offer an understanding of the struggle for equality. As in other titles in the series, these 31 chronologically arranged primary sources have been carefully selected, with Hudson providing expert and understandable commentary on complex issues. Selections range from a speech by Senator Jacob Howard introducing the Fourteenth Amendment (1866) to a statement by President Barack Obama on the Obergefell Decision (2015), but the majority are 20th-century court cases including Brown v. Board of Education, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Bakke v. University of California. Supplementing the documents is a time line from 1857 to 2015.
VERDICT A well-presented work, recommended for most collections serving high school students.
