Gr 5-8–The food we eat depends on a variety of factors such as cultural heritage, income, availability, and personal preferences; and what we eat is directly related to the health of our planet. With accessible language, Broyles explains the relationship between climate change and how we grow, harvest, package, and distribute our food. She discusses the impact that large factory farms known as CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) have on the environment. These farms supply 98% of the meat and eggs consumed by Americans. Not only do CAFOs require vast amounts of water (1,850 gallons of water are needed to produce a pound of beef versus 256 for soybeans and 148 for corn), but livestock such as cows produce lots of methane gas (which increases greenhouse gases) and potentially toxic waste. Broyles explains that small changes such as eating less meat can make a difference, and that adhering to a vegan diet is even better. After making her case for the importance of a plant-based diet, Broyles lists famous vegans and their reasons for becoming vegan; she also explains ways to get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals with a vegan diet. An extensive bibliography and additional resources is included for aspiring vegans or readers who want to know more about climate change, animal rights, nutrition, and carbon footprints. Several well-placed, colorful illustrations lend a joyful and upbeat feel to what could otherwise be disheartening content.
VERDICT This call to action for the middle grade set is chock full of information and concrete suggestions for kids to participate in the effort to combat climate change. Recommended for young environmental activists and foodies alike.
