PreS-Gr 1–Insects are the sole focus of this simple reader. One short sentence is found at the bottom of each page, along with an illustration of an insect in its natural habitat above. “Insects have six legs. Insects have three body parts.” Soft, realistic illustrations appear to be gouache, with the color green present on nearly every page. Readers will learn about where insects live, what they eat, how they move, and if they’re helpful to the environment. As with a guided reading book, young biologists are certain to catch on to the flow of this book and probably even memorize it.
VERDICT A nice introduction to insects complete with pictures. A first purchase for libraries where little ones are curious about some of the smallest creatures in our world.
