Gr 4-8–A high-energy but uneven primer on climate justice. UK activist Loach, who is of Jamaican descent, presents a call to action to tweens on climate justice issues. In this passionate and friendly narrative, she shares jaw-dropping facts like how 20 percent of people are responsible for 80 percent of the world’s consumption. Loach never talks down to readers; her tone and voice are that of a cool older sister who loves the color pink and encourages them to never stop feeling things and caring about their causes. However, the work often gets bogged down by complex ideas that aren’t always discussed accessibly. A big focus is on how the environmental issues we are facing have been caused by the intersection of capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy. This will be revelatory for most kids (and adults), but often, these very important themes are given short shrift. Suggestions, such as protests, strikes, letter campaigns, making pledges to consume less, and veganism are doable for the audience, but details on how to make these happen aren’t fleshed out. The bright and attractive cover will draw in readers, and the black-and-white interiors with illustrations and infographics scattered throughout will engage them. Text is bolded for emphasis and pull quotes help break up the narrative. A poem written by Loach closes each part, adding a personal touch. A glossary and resources for further action round out the back matter.
VERDICT Purchase where there are already initiated environmental activists. Those in need of a more practical how-to should look elsewhere.
