Gr 2-4–In this excellent anthology are tales attributed to Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and Yemen, as well as the general region. Illustrations depict the bright costumes, geography, and iconic architecture of that part of the world. But if the stories are specifically Arabic, they offer universal truths and values. Children familiar with this genre of stories will undoubtedly make connections to other tales they’ve heard or read. The most recognizable tales are versions of Cinderella, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, and Aladdin. With the help of a snake, a devoted daughter finds her father. King Solomon and his favorite bird convince a sun-worshipping queen to embrace a higher power. A poor bricklayer is accused of stealing a dusty hard piece of bread and asked to pay for the steam he uses to soften it. A brave girl sets out to vanquish a menacing crocodile. Charity, human kindness, and wisdom are celebrated repeatedly, and good always wins over evil. This book can be savored all at once or as a read-aloud over time and many story hours.
VERDICT An inviting and accessible addition for any folktale collection
