Gr 2-4–Your soon-to-be armchair detectives will be grabbing their magnifying glasses and fingerprint dusters and heading to work with forensic scientists. Biotechnology expert and STEM consultant Staveley takes readers to the scene of a crime, in an adorably macabre alphabet primer. Taking children from A to Z, every letter introduces a job or term that relates to forensics and then provides a thoughtful description and definition. By traveling through the alphabet, the author chronologically goes through the steps of solving a crime. Some may find the words chosen to be a bit on the morbid side—“B is for Blood” and “V is for Victim,” as examples—however, it is all presented tastefully and in a nonviolent way. Crime scene investigators present as a mix of ethnicities, races, and genders.
VERDICT A delightfully informative addition to any career or science section, geared towards older readers.
