Gr 8 Up–This latest entry in the series aimed at students completing research or homework assignments addresses both the development and current state of American use and attitudes toward social media: the technology’s evolution; its commercial, learning, political, and legal applications; and popular opinions. However, the work has several significant shortcomings, such as poor editing and proofreading. While broadcast radio is forced into the discussion (although not characterized by peer-to-peer interaction), citizen band radio (CB) is omitted. Black-and-white photos are frequently fuzzy and lack dates and regularly present dated images as though contemporary. Crowdsourcing does not appear in the index, nor does any discussion of crowdsourcing networks such as Trip Advisor or teacher rating sites.
VERDICT A distinctly marginal purchase for collections requiring paper-based works for studying the Internet as a popular tool.
