PreS-Gr 2—The familiar fairy tale by Charles Perrault is greatly simplified with cartoon illustrations for a speedy retelling by Joel Fitzpatrick (Flowerpot, 2014). Puss speaks occasionally in rhyme, and when he does, it adds much amusement: "Give me the match to this red leather boot, and I will give you a mountain of loot!" If only he rhymed all the time. There is little to none in the way of animation, as this adaptation consists of scans of the book's illustrations by Mark Kummer, with no added effects. Energetically narrated by Nicholas Mondelli, this might find a use in compare/contrast lessons using different versions of fairy tales.
VERDICT Overall, an additional purchase.
