Gr 1-3–Wiles (Kent State) connects experiences throughout the life of Robert F. Kennedy to inspire readers to look for transformative experiences in their own lives. The biography is framed with a grandfather telling his granddaughter about the life of RFK. Readers will find out at the end of the book that the characters are lining the railroad tracks waiting for Kennedy’s body to travel by as it did on June 8, 1968. Effective use of lengthy quotes throughout the text brings the immediacy of Kennedy’s work and world view to the forefront. Connecting his childhood of privilege and competition to the challenges of leadership in the face of family tragedy and his own shyness, a picture of the young boy with a big heart who grew up to be a visionary leader emerges.
VERDICT While not structured as a research book for a biography report, this title would be useful for students looking to learn more about great American leaders as well as students wanting to learn how to masterfully weave quotations into a text.
