First, we see “Big Bear” opposite “Little Bear.” Then “Big Bear’s boots” (large and white) opposite “Little Bear’s boots” (small and black). Readers also see Big Bear’s car (an actual vehicle), while Little Bear’s car is the backpack Little Bear rides around in, on Big Bear’s back. The concise, accessible language on each spread and the visual clues in simplified, sunny art will have toddlers guessing along in a soothing glimpse of parenting. While contrasts are drawn between the two bears, neither one is ever gendered.
VERDICT Perfect for the board book shelves, this is an ideal book for baby story hours.
