An abuelo is also a person to go on adventures with, such as building a fort, going on bike rides, and hiking. Alejo and his grandfather do everything together, so much that Alejo is called Abuelito, or little grandfather. Sadly, Abuelo becomes very sick and goes to the hospital, never to return. Alejo is sad and attempts the activities they once did together, but it is not the same. A neighbor steps in, which helps Alejo, and they eventually become dear friends. Sanfelippo’s illustrations beautifully show the love and care of this story.
VERDICT Losing a loved one is never easy, but having someone to help us through the grieving process allows us to heal; Benavides and Buchet have created a work that allows readers to understand the connection between love and grief, healing, and new beginnings.
