Gr 1-3–This volume covers a lot with fewer than 100 pages: art history, art method, art instruction, and art-making, all while presenting an inclusive and diverse story of art and artists across time. It’s great! After sharing Aaron’s story of learning to illustrate while reading with his dyslexia—a story readers can take in more fully in Aaron Slater, Illustrator—the book introduces its big project: Art! Text and illustrations create complex pages packed with information and instruction. While making art is a major theme of the book, there are also pages dedicated to enjoying art, too, e.g., “Being a good audience member,” and “The viewer interprets the art.”
VERDICT What an empowering way to frame art for children; not only can they make it, but they learn how to be absorbed by it and talk about it, too.
